Month: January 2018

In case you forgot…

Last season, we added an addendum to our standings page. In the description of the “draws” column, we added that in Winter 2018, a loss in Sudden death would provide a single point (much like overtime loss in hockey). This was because the WDBF rulebook received an update that ended the possibility for a game to end in a draw.

This was at the bottom of the standings page, and while some people noticed it, many did not. We just wanted to make sure there was no confusion as to the “SDL” column in standings – which means Sudden Death Loss.

All the schedules are done!

Thursday schedules are finally out! Thursdays provided the biggest challenge for us as it is our second biggest night, and we have done our best to make the schedule as fair as possible to everyone. Unless there is a legitimate error (3 teams listed for the same time, or the wrong gym posted on a game) we will not be changing the schedule any further. Silver teams, please check the schedule for your double header (each team has one).

For Thursday nights, games starting at 6:30, 7:30, or 8:30 are at East Elmwood and games starting at 8:00 or 9:00 are at Sinclair Park. If you notice a game erroneously listed as the wrong gym, or if a team’s double header is listed at 2 separate gyms, please notify us. We have gone over the schedule to make sure this is not the case but it is possible we missed something. Please do not email us if your team plays the same team twice or for any reason other than the ones listed in this post. This was a very tricky schedule to make and believe us when we say we have done our best to please everyone as best as possible.

There have been changes since yesterday. The schedule was not complete/published at that time so if you wrote any games down make sure you double check as many have been moved around since then.

A few FAQs from this season:

Q: Is the schedule out?

A: The schedule for any given night is not considered complete until we have emailed the captains of that night with the contact list.

Q: I can see games appearing as you enter them, why don’t you just release the schedules all at once?

A: We do not have a dedicated web development department and therefore do not have a sandbox server in which to make things before they are published.

Q: My team was bumped up a division, why was this?

A: When a division has 5 or 9 teams we cannot make it work with the length of our season. To keep things fair, we bump the highest ranked team from last season up a level, or the lowest ranked one down a level, depending on if there is an uneven number of teams. Example: A division with 9 teams will have the one that was most successful bumped up one level.

Q: Can you move us back down?

A: We are sorry, we cannot. We only move teams around when we have to. We held registration open an extra week to try to get extra teams in divisions where we would have to bump teams, and managed to get a few extra ones so we ended up bumping teams in just 2 divisions out of the entire league. We do our best to provide you with the level of play that is appropriate for your team. This also means that once rosters are submitted, we do move teams up to the level they belong at if we believe they are intentionally registering below their skill level. We care about your experience, and do our best to make every division as far as possible given the restraints we are working with.

We understand it can be frustrated to be bumped up, but if it ends up being a miscalculation on our part, be assured that you won’t get bumped up again the next season. Sometimes divisions are combined when there aren’t enough at one level (like this summer when we had only 2 teams register for Sunday silver) but we do our absolute best to keep things as even as we can.

Q: We play the same team two weeks in a row, is this a mistake?

A: It is not a mistake. When divisions have any number of teams other than 8, you will end up playing some teams twice. Sometimes those weeks will be consecutive. Everything is entered into a round robin generator and to avoid making mistakes we enter them into our system in the order they are generated. Sometimes that means you play twice in a row.

Sunday schedules are up!

Sunday schedules have been posted! We have also added the following to our schedule page:

Before you consider emailing the league, please read the following:

  1. If you’re concerned about a date missing please check our important dates page.
  2. If you’re concerned about your team playing the same team twice in a row, it happens. Not every division has a perfect number of teams, no it was not a mistake.
  3. If you’re concerned because you don’t see your schedule yet, please wait until we are 72 hours or less before your game. You will always have your schedule 72 hours before your game, if it is missing at that point then it is an error and please notify us.

Gmail is filtering our emails, here’s how to avoid it

The easiest way is to just find a message from us, and add to contacts or add to your safe list. You may find emails from us in your spam folder if you do a search for the term “dodgeball” or “dodgeballwinnipeg.com”.

If you cannot find any emails from us, please follow these steps:

Click the gear in the top right and select “settings”.

Then go to the bottom and click “create a new filter”

Type dodgeballwinnipeg.com into the “from” section, and click “create filter with this search”.

Select “never send it to spam” and then click “create filter.

Hopefully soon Gmail will learn we are not sending spam. Until then, please follow these steps to ensure you receive all communications from the league. Thanks!

Learn to play Dodgeball this Thursday at EECC

We are hosting an event at East Elmwood Community Center (490 Keenleyside) 7:30-9:30pm to teach players the basic of Dodgeball. $10/person, check out the facebook event here.

You should come to this event if:

  1. You have never played dodgeball as an adult
  2. You have played dodgeball in any other league (we are the only league in Winnipeg that uses the international standard WDBF rules)
  3. You are joining our league for the first time
  4. You have teammates who are new and they want you to come so they don’t have to go alone

You should not come to this event if you are already very experienced in dodgeball in our community. This event is 100% focused on teaching players the game and giving them some experience, it will not be like our drop-in events where there is space for both beginner and top level players. For people just looking to get more playing time in, please check out our drop-in today (Tuesday January 2nd) at EECC. Also 7:30-9:30pm.

Schedules are coming out!

Draft, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays are complete. The schedules are published on our schedules page. Captains have been notified via email and sent the contact list for these days.

Thursday and Sunday team league schedules are still being worked on. Do not email the league asking when they will be complete, our policy has always been that you will have your schedules at least 72 hours before your first game and we ensure that happens every season.
