Small rules updates for the Winter 2019 season

One of our organizational goals is to align Dodgeball Winnipeg with the rest of the leagues worldwide that play WDBF format. We want to make sure our league is consistent in style with other leagues so Dodgeball as a sport is played the same no matter where you are.

For this reason, we are enacting the following changes for the Winter 2019 season:

  1. A ball will not be considered out of bounds until you can visibly see the floor between the ball and the sideline. This means ball retrievers can no longer grab a ball that is touching the line.
  2. Sudden death loss will be renamed Overtime Loss, and teams will only receive this point if they play a tie-breaker that goes beyond regulation time. For regular league play this means playing a sudden-death tie-breaker. For competitive divisions this means teams will only receive a point if they go into the 4 minute overtime round AFTER they play sudden death at the end of the second half.
  3. We have changed the priorities in our standings so that number of wins will be more important than rounds won when tie breaking.
As it currently stands, the priorities are as follows: Points, Goal Differential, Goals For (in that order)
Starting in winter it will be: Points, Goal Differential, Number of Wins, Goals For (in that order)
  4. Goal differential will be renamed score differential

Update

For anybody wondering where we are at:

Monday schedules are complete. There were a couple schedule errors pointed out to us upon release so please give it another check over as one date in November and one in October had to be fixed.

Tuesday schedules are complete.

Wednesday schedules are complete.

Sunday schedules up to and including November 4th are complete, but the 18th and 25th are still under construction.

We will begin work on the Thursday schedules once the women’s committee has divided up the teams in Women’s division. Women’s division filled up on Wednesday and the committee begun work on the teams shortly after.

Looking for a few more players for our gendered divisions

We are looking for a few more individual signups in our Men’s and Women’s divisions Thursday nights. The cost is only $64.90 to play for the whole season! Starts the first Thursday of October and runs 9 weeks.

To sign up as an individual player for Women’s division, please fill out this form and then pay: http://dodgeballwinnipeg.com/womensdivision/

To sign up as an individual player for our Men’s division, please pay through our webstore and you will be added to our team of individual male players: http://dodgeballwinnipeg.com/product/individual-mens-registration/

Survey results are in!

The survey on the future of stat keepers received 100 responses, which broke down as follows:

We are going to implement the option the community chose (each team is required to provide a stat keeper for the hour opposite the one they play), and blend it with the second option of a raffle each week.

The cost of draft will be increased by $0.95 which gives us just over $120 to buy merch/shwag for the people who do keep stats each week. In addition, at the end of the season all stat keepers who kept stats at least 5 times will be entered into a draw for half price draft the next season (OR a $30 DW gift code if they are not playing draft), and the stat keeper who keeps stats the most times (5 times minimum) will win a red DW hoodie (we will permit ties, so if multiple people tie for most stats kept, they will all win hoodies).

Captains will be contacted each week to find out who they have wrangled for stats, and any team that does not organize a stat keeper for the slot they’re responsible for will receive scores of 0 for their stats that week. We will put together a calendar so that teams can organize their stat keeping responsibilities as far in advance as they wish.

Thanks again to everyone for your input! We will be opening up draft registration soon. 64 slots will be reserved for the returning players from this summer, and 64 more slots will be opened to the public right away. On August 31st any reserved slots that are unused will be opened the public as well.

Premier league makes a comeback!

Premier league is coming back this fall! It will look a bit different from last time, but will offer that same top level of competition you have come to expect. This will not affect regular league play

  1. It will be run on a 30’x60′ court in a 49’x80′ gymnasium, meaning there are boundaries on all sides with ~10′ of extra space around all sides
  2. There will be no gender minimums. This will allow men’s and women’s provincial teams to practice together in real game situations
  3. There will likely be nets behind each team’s rear out line
  4. Teams will be required to bring their own ball shagger(s) each game, the league will not provide these and they are necessary to keep the balls in play so be prepared!
  5. This is not for the faint of heart! There will be teams here who compete at the national level, and this is our way of catering to the competitive community
  6. It will run Wednesday nights 7:00-10:00pm, meaning there is only room for 6 teams
  7. Cost will be $595 during early bird, $645 after the early bird deadline is passed
  8. There will be 2 referees, but we still expect you to be honest. The extra ref is because people will now also be called for stepping out of bounds on the back lines and the extra set of eyes will help keep track of this
  9. Due to setup and teardown of nets, games will have 20 minute halves (the WDBF standard) instead of 25 minutes (the DW standard)

Long weekend update

With August long coming up, there are no games on Sunday or Monday. Enjoy your time off, we will be away as well and respond to inquiries when we return.

Also, Thursday drop-ins have been cancelled for the summer and will return between seasons. Future drop-ins will happen when we have empty gym space, and between seasons.

Have fun, we’ll be back on Tuesday!

Thursday format

Just a reminder to all Thursday Gold players in case your captain did not share the e-mail they were sent at the beginning of the season with the format.

Because we have 7 teams and a 10-week season, this is what is happening:

Each team will play 6 season games over the first 7 weeks (you will get one by-week where you do not play)

On week 8 team 1 will play team 3, team 2 will play team 4, team 5 will play team 7 and team 6 will play team 7 (based on rank)

On week 9 you will play semi-finals (1v4, 2v3, 5v7, 5v6)

On week 10 you will play finals (winner v winner, loser v loser, 5v6 and 6v7)

We will be adding an 11th week after the championship is completed. These games will be for fun, and the last-place Thursday gold team will face the first-place Thursday silver team.

This way each team competing in the playoffs will have completed an even number of games and you will still get at least the 10 games you signed up for. Some teams will get 11 games!

Draft opens to the public May 29

Draft registration opens to the Public May 29th. If you are currently in draft, make sure you register before then to secure your spot! There will only be room for 64 players total and we sold over half those spots during pre-registration so make sure you sign up ASAP to secure your spot.
